Just like last year when Burkburnett’s Rizonn Hendricks(19) and Wichita Falls High School’s Darion Minor (26) suited up, this year’s Oil Bowl will have plenty of area football standouts
Thirty-seven area high school football standouts from nearly 20 schools will be arriving Wednesday at Midwestern State’s campus in preparation for the 80th annual Oil Bowl.
This marks the second year since the Maskat Shrine shifted focus to involving more area athletes in the all-star game played at Memorial Stadium. Saturday’s kickoff will take place at 7:30 p.m.
Among the selected standouts are both Times Record News Red River 22 Most Valuable Players from last fall – Iowa Park’s Bowie Franks and Munday’s Day’veon Dockins, running backs who will suit up for the West. In all, 20 large school and small school Red River 22 selections will represent their high schools one final time.
Three of Midwestern State’s local signees also will be represented in Rider’s Deven Smith, Electra’s Xavier Waggoner and Munday’s Jacoby Thomas.
All six head coaches leading the East and West either are at area high schools or used to be. Windthorst’s Chris Tackett will get to coach his son Brady one more time.
There will be a six-man football player on each roster as Notre Dame’s Skyler Whitten will represent the West and Tioga’s Travis Price will represent the East. Price will be playing for his coach Cody Patton, who was a longtime Holliday defensive coordinator and one-year head coach for the Eagles.
The 37 area players are the most ever to appear in an Oil Bowl, topping last year’s total of 31. The only three 11-man area schools who won’t be represented are Graham, Hirschi and Archer City – all of whom fielded young squads this past season.
Area football fans also may recognize some standouts from district opponents, especially on the East with Decatur running back Payton McAlister and Krum quarterback Brandon Reeves. McAlister was the 4-4A Division I Offensive Player of the Year, while Reeves was the District 3-4A Division II MVP after leading the Bobcats to a district title.
East Texas holds a 3-1 record over West Texas and has won two straight games since the Oil Bowl ended the Texas-Oklahoma format in 2013. Last year, Henrietta’s Cody Fletcher scored in overtime to give the East a 20-14 decision.
