The 78th annual Oil Bowl will have a decidedly Wichita Falls High School flavor when it kicks off June 13 at Memorial Stadium.

That’s because four Coyotes — the most from an area team — will play in the high school all-star football game. The West Texas team will be coached by Old High’s Danny Russell and he’ll have assistants Joe Cluley and Tim Riley on his staff.

But the Old High ties don’t end there. Former Coyote coach Jayson Lavender (Frisco Independence) will be the East Texas offensive coordinator, while ex-defensive coordinator Marcus Shavers (West Mesquite) is also on the coaching staff.

The West Texas team will have 12 area athletes suit up, including four Coyotes who get to play for their coach one more time — receiver L.J. Dabbs, defensive back B.J. Mayze, offensive lineman Aaron Gonzalez and linebacker Quentin Sims.

Dynamic Hirschi tailback Cedric Battle, who rushed for more than 2,600 yards and 30 touchdowns, will also play in the all-star game. Other local players coming are Burkburnett’s Marquis Askew, Windthorst’s Avery Blagg, Bowie’s David Correa, Graham’s Landon Gonzales, Vernon’s Zack McMahen, Rider’s Draven Montgomery and Crowell’s Mitchell Parsley.

The defensive coordinator for West Texas is Burkburnett head coach Scott Boswell. Mansfield Legacy’s Chris Melson, who coached at Electra from 2005-06, will be the team’s offensive coordinator.

Independence’s Kyle Story, who spent several years at Decatur before starting from scratch at the new Frisco school, will be the head coach for East Texas. Little Elm’s Kendrick Brown will be the East Texas defensive coordinator.

Before the 2014 season, Brown was DeSoto’s defensive coordinator and that connection had an impact on this year’s East Texas roster. Seven DeSoto players who helped the Eagles nearly knock off eventual state champion Allen in the 6A Division I playoffs are slated to participate in the game.

The Oil Bowl will be played at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Memorial Stadium. Reserved seating is $12 and general admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the Maskat Shrine or by calling 940-766-4511. The game raises money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Oil Bowl Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 12 at the Maskat Shrine Center located at 5101 Henry S. Grace Freeway. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Maskat Office or by calling 940-766-4511.
